Shai Linne Update
Shai has let it known that he will be an intern at Capitol Hill Baptist Church (Mark Dever is Senior Pastor).
Shai on his Blog use's a good analogy for truth and Culture:
Truth= Lyrics
Cultural Expression = Melody
- In this analogy, the content of the gospel is the "lyrics" of the song and cultural expression is the
"melody" of the song. The "lyrics" (gospel content) should never change. Truth transcends language,
ethnicity and cultural expression. The gospel is the same whether it's proclaimed in China, the Sudan
or the Bronx.
- At the same time, cultural expression varies. Cultural expression is the "melody". The sound of
the "song" will be as varied as the amount of languages that are spoken. I should not expect the
melodies of a Japanese gospel song to necessarily sound the same as the melodies of a gospel
song in Trinidad.
These are wise word indeed. Do we reach our culture and meet our culture head on? without compromise to the gospel?
Do we hang on to traditional hymns just out of plain traditionalism. Nothing against traditional hymns some of them are great the rest can be dire, and even as a Christian very hard to sing in devotion to my Lord.
Anyhow, read the post at Shai's blog (Lyrical Theology), maybe you might think more about how we don't reach our own generation.
