To us a Child is born.

112976_nativ2_lgFor to Us a Child Is Born

But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
The people who walked in darkness  have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,  on them has light shined (Isa 9:1-2).

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel,  whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days (Mic 5:2).

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isa 9:6).

because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace (Luke 1:79)."

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4).

Just a thought, remember no matter what gift you get a Christmas.  Big or small they have no value compared to the greatest treasure of the whole universe, that is, Christ Jesus the Lord.

Jesus said…… "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Pt3, The Power of the Blood

The Power of the Blood Pt3.

(Part 1, Part 2)

Last time, Andrew Murray showed what Jesus said about the 'Blood'. Now he moves to what the Apostles say on the 'Blood'. With the Resurrection and Ascension the Apostles no longer know Jesus in the flesh, Murray points out that “all that was symbolical has passed away, and the deep spiritual truths expressed by symbol, are unveiled (The teaching of the Apostles under the Holy Spirit).

The book of Hebrews, which shows the end of temple service and that God had intended it to pass away, now that Christ had come, Has some important verses.

  • He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption (Heb 9:12).
  • How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God (v14).
  • Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:19)
  • And to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood ( Heb 12:24)
  • So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured (Heb 13:12-13).
  • Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant(13:20).

The Holy spirit is teaching us as Murray says that “the blood is really the central power of our entire redemption”. “Not Without Blood” is as valid in the New Testament as it is in the New.

The Blood of Jesus – shed in His death for sin, can:
  • cover sin from God's side
  • or, remove from it on ours
Paul writes, “ and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins (Romans 3:24-25”.
To the Corinthians, “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ (1 Cor 10:16)?
Paul reminds us in Ephesians that “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace (Eph 1:7)”. and, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ (Eph 2:13)”.
Peter tells his reader's, “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood (1 Pet 1:2)”. And redeemed by, “the precious blood of Christ (1 Pet 1:19)”.

John Assures us that “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7)”.

Andrew Murray reminds us that, “All the Apostles agree in mentioning the blood and in glorying in it, as the power by which eternal redemption through Christ is fully accomplished, and is then applied by the Holy Spirit”.

“Not without Blood”.

Over at Challies, there is a weekly read along with a book by another Murray (John) the book is called Redemption Accomplished and applied. Check out also Rebecca's notes on the same book here.

The power of the Blood pt2

Going on from an earlier post  'The Power of the Blood of Christ – Andrew Murray' .  Murray now takes to what our Lord Jesus said about the 'blood'.

Murray starts with John the Baptist pointing to Christ's dual role.

  1. The Lamb of God – Takes away the sin of the world.
  2. The one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

When all that the OT taught about the blood (being fulfilled), can the dispensation of the spirit begin.  The shedding of Christs blood (the Lamb of God) must procede the outpouring of the spirit.

The purpose for which Jesus had come into the world was His death on the cross,

That it was a necessary condition of redemption and life which he came to bring.  The shedding of His blood was necessary.

John 6:30;59    (Bread of life/He who drinks my blood)

V54 "but anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life".  It is through dying for us (Shedding his blood) we have life.

"Jesus confirmed the teachings of the OT offerings – that man can live only through the death of another (substitute), and so obtain a life that through ressurection has become eternal".

Murray draws our attention to the fact that Jesus Himself cannot make any man a partaker in this eternal life to which Christ procured for us, except throught the shedding of His precious blood, and causing us to drink it.

'Not Without Blood' can eternal Life be ours!

The Power of the Blood of Christ – Andrew Murray.

Amongst other books, I am reading through Andrew Murray's classic 'The power of the blood of Christ'. This is a short book but packed with wisdom from Murray.

Chapter 1, takes a fast walk through the whole bible on significance of the blood. The main theme of this chapter is to giveandrew murray a biblical overview of 'Not without Blood' (Heb 9:7,18). It is Murray' objective to demonstrate what the scriptures teach “concerning the Glorious Power of the Blood of Christ, and the wonderful blessings it has procured for us by it.” He will progressively show that the one and same blood, is the power of redemption.

Chapter 1 is split into small sections. Blood -

  1.  In the Old Testament
  2. In the teaching of our Lord Jesus Himself

  3. In what the Apostles say

  4. In what the Apostle John tells us in Revelation

1_In the Old Testament

We are taken straight outside the gates of Eden. Hardly had these gates been firmly shut that we see the connection of sacrifice with Able. Heb 11:4 tells us that it was by faith Able sacrificed. “his faith and God's good pleasure in him are closely linked with sacrificial blood.”

Murrays states:

“In Light of later revelation, this testimony, given at the very beginning of human history, is of deep significance. It shows that there can be no approach to God; no fellowship with Him by faith; no enjoyment of His favour, apart from THE BLOOD”!

Next we can see that through the flood (God's judgement on sin), that God brought forth a “new earth from that awful baptism of water”. Murray points to the fact that the new earth must also be baptised by Blood. 'As with Abel, so also with Noah at a new beginning' it was “Not without BLOOD.”

As we move onto Abraham and God establishing His kingdom on earth, we see that this is not 'without Blood'. Abraham was already in a covenant relationship with God. However, “ the son (Isaac) of promise” (who was wholly God's), can only be surrendered to God by death. To be truly God's Isaac had to die as Murray also states – “For Abraham, as well as for Isaac, only by death could freedom from the self life be obtained.” Isaac's life was spared and a ram was sacrificed in his place (a substitute). Through the blood of that sacrifice his own life was spared.

“He [Isaac] and the people that sprang from him, live before God 'NOT WITHOUT BLOOD.' By that blood, however, he was in a figure raised from the dead.” Murray points out that here we have a great lesson on substitution.

Even the release from Egyptian bondage some 400 years later, the Israelite's was to be recognised as God's 'first born' among nations. But as Murray's catch phrase says again “NOT WITHOUT BLOOD.”

Murray,

What blood accomplished on Mount Moriah [Abraham and Isaac] for one person, who was the father of the nation, must now experience by that nation.” what Murray is saying, is that, the nation of Israel can only experience life by death, and that by a substitute, hence the lamb, and the sprinkling of blood on their doorways. It was this, in Murrays words that “ instituted the Passover with the words- 'When I see BLOOD I will pass over you.”

This was more so at Mt Sinai, the law given was the 'Foundation of His covenant' (For more on covenant see M.Horton, Introduction to covenant theology). That covenant must now be established but as it is expressly stated in Hebrews 9:7, 'NOT WITHOUT BLOOD'. Now the people had the blood sprinkled over them. This is the declaration “This is the BLOOD of the covenant” (Exodus 24).

We can see where Murray is taking us, there are differences between the sacrifices of of Abel, of the ram on Mt Moriah, to the painting of the blood on door posts of homes then at Sinai, it was sprinkled on the persons themselves. “The contact was closer, the application more powerful”!

We can see that the the blood of a substitute is essential to approach and to have fellowship with God. From Abel to the Temple we can see in the Old Testament that a substitute had to die, blood had to be shed. For sin had such a grip that it led to death.

Next Murray takes us to “what our Lord Jesus Himself taught about 'THE BLOOD'.”

I go on night shift now, but hope to have the next part up soon.
