The curse

Christ  redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree (Gal 3:13)” ………. For freedom Christ has set us free (Gal 5:1).

You will Love this video of Sproul on the curse motif.

Reformation Study Bible iPhone App. (ESV)

esv_ref_iphone

New from Ligonier ministries (RC Sproul), is the Reformation Study Bible iPhone App.  This includes all the excellent study notes found in this version of the ESV.  From Ligonier themselves:

Released just a few weeks ago, hundreds of people have already purchased The Reformation Study Bible iPhone app. The application provides easy access to:
  • More than 20,000 study notes on Bible verses and terms
  • Introductions to the seven groups of biblical books
  • Book introductions with outlines
  • 96 theological essays on central doctrines of Scripture
  • Entire text of the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible
The Reformation Study Bible (ESV) is built on the advanced AcroBible software for iPhone and iPod touch and includes features such as:
  • Fast keyword, phrase, and wildcard search
  • Highlight verses in multiple colors
  • Personalize verses with your own notes
  • Web backup of notes and highlighting
  • Direct, two-way Web synchronization
  • Verse tagging

I have a copy in hardback and it is invaluable for the ESV text and the study notes, this app sounds really good and gets good reviews.  According to the Apps designers:

The Reformation Study Bible is the first Bible since the 1560 Geneva Bible to contain study tools rooted in the biblical doctrines recovered during the Protestant Reformation. Under the direction of Dr. R.C. Sproul, this foundational resource was created by more than fifty scholars and features thousands of in-depth study notes, 96 theological articles, 19 in-text maps, colored maps, and 12 charts to help you understand the Bible better. This App follows on the heals of Marshill’s iPhone App, this seems to be a growing trend in evangelism, excellent :)

Holiness of God: RC Sproul

rcsproul_holinessOut of all the books I have read recently ‘The Holiness of God’ has had a changing effect on me personally. I can guarantee after reading this book you will not be the same again.

Sproul starts of with his own conversion, which sets the tone for the rest of the book. It was for him like the Damascus road incident. Sproul had a zeal to be a great christian for Christ.

But, in his own words:

“I knew who Jesus was, but God the Father was shrouded in mystery. He was hidden, an enigma to my mind and a stranger to my soul. A dark veil covered His face”.

I wonder, how many Christians if we are to be honest with ourselves would identify with Sproul’s own lack of knowledge of the Father?

He is that powerful His word’s create
Isaiah was undone in His presence
As was Peter when he encountered the Divine

We are to be Holy as God is Holy, the angels sing Holy, Holy,Holy. When in a philosophy class sproul was awakened, he had a passion to “ know God in His majesty, to know Him in His power, to know Him in his august power”.

The books takes you through God’s mercy, justice, purity, and the biggest word in the book ‘Transcendence’ (R.C was asked not to use any big words in his book).

The final chapter ‘God in the hands of angry sinners’ starts with a quote from Jonathan Edwards “Almost every natural man that hears of hell, flatters himself that he shall escape it.” The final chapter starts with looking at a famous sermon from Edwards and brings the book to a close.

This book in my opinion should be a ‘compulsory’ read for all Christians young or old.
